Trivia

Lapras shown with teeth in its Generation I artwork.

  • In the Pokémon Red and Blue beta, Lapras was originally going to exist called "Ness", a reference to the Loch Ness Monster.
  • Lapras was depicted with teeth in its Generation I official artwork and in Pokémon Adventures.
  • Lapras has the highest base HP of all Water ice-type Pokémon.
  • Lapras is 1 of two Pokémon to apply telepathy to speak to humans in a regular episode of the anime. The other is Ralts.
  • In Generation 2 games, a Lapras icon represents Lapras, Seel, or Dewgong at the political party screen.
  • In Generation Two games, when any Pokémon except Pikachu uses Surf to travel over bodies of water, the thespian appears to exist controlling a Lapras. This surfing Lapras shares the same color palette equally the player, therefore it is red if the player is male (GSC Surf M.png) or bluish if the player is female (C Surf F.png).
  • In Pokémon Ten and Y, Lapras has a unique 3D model when surfing, whereas all other surfing Pokémon are depicted as dark blobs. This may exist an homage to the Generation II surfing sprites, or Lapras'south role every bit a means of transport.
    • A Shiny Lapras uses the same 3D model equally a regular ane while surfing.
    • In photos taken at Azure Bay, the role player is seen riding a Lapras even if no Lapras is in the party.
  • Lapras tin learn the most ane-hit knockout moves of whatever Pokémon (excluding Smeargle), being able to learn Sheer Cold, Fissure, and Horn Drill.

Origin

Lapras is based on the fabled Loch Ness Monster in Scotland. The beast and this Pokémon resemble an extinct lodge of marine reptiles known as Plesiosauria. Lapras's beat and horn may be inspired by placodonts. Its intelligence, singing, and rarity tin can be comparable to some cetaceans, especially blueish whales and humpback whales. Its long cervix and robust trunk may besides be inspired past the mastheads and hulls of Viking ships. Its Gigantamax grade may be based on a cruise transport or possibly a music box or an ocarina.

Name origin

Lapras is a corruption of Laplace.

Laplace may be a reference to Pierre-Simon Laplace, a mathematician who wrote several books on the mathematical properties of the sea and tides. Alternatively, Laplace may be derived from la place (French for seat), referring to how passengers sit on its dorsum like a seat to exist ferried beyond bodies of water. It may also exist derived from lapis lazuli, a bright blue gem.
